Steve Hughes has a selection for Tuesday’s feature race
The race of the day on Tuesday looks to be on sand rather than turf with some old favourites lining up over the flying 5f. However I have a fancy for a horse that has not had many chances at the distance. We kept up the recent winning streak with Doc Carver a narrow but brave winner at Chepstow (advised 4/1).
Newcastle 5.15: El Hombre
An interesting sprint and at the prices El Hombre makes each-way appeal.
Keith Dalgleish’s 5yo has really come into his own in recent races and taken a real liking for an artificial surface. A gelding operation in the summer might have helped too. He was a beaten favourite at Lingfield last time – but he came down the unfavoured inside rail which won’t have helped.
Prior to that he was a convincing 2l winner over 6f at Wolverhampton, where he was up near the front throughout. He has not had too many chances over 5f in recent seasons, but his record has been solid reading 2173 since the summer of 2017. That included a third place here in November, where he was twice stopped in his challenge late on. His prominent racing tactics could prove useful against a host of opponents best at coming from well off the pace.
