Steve Hughes has a selection for the best race on Monday
Decent fields at all three meetings today, although the standard is not overly high. There is one class 3 contest and that is a staying hurdle at Warwick which is the basis for my selection.
Warwick 2.40: Captain Cargo
The most lightly raced runner in the field, Captain Cargo’s form is already of a high standard and he looks a typically thorough stayer from the Caroline Bailey yard.
His two runs in points in Ireland displayed little ability, but in three 3m hurdles this autumn, he has shown much more. He was a fair third on hurdling debut at Southwell, but he has stepped up markedly on that in two runs here.
Firstly he was second to De Name Evades Me in a novice hurdle, running on strongly right to the winning post. That qualified him for a handicap mark and he was immediately sent into that sphere for a race here over course and distance on New Years Eve. He acquitted himself really well again with another second place and as this is only his fourth start under rules there is surely more to come.
1pt win – Captain Cargo – 2.40 Warwick – 100/30 general
