Steve Hughes has a bet for the flat at Pontefract on Tuesday
Pontefract’s 2019 season gets underway and almost inevitably there is a long distance handicap that the track specialises in, the first of a series that runs throughout the season. I have a selection already successful around Britain’s longest circuit.
Pontefract 4.00: So Near So Farhh
Already proven as an out and out stayer, So Near So Farhh can make a winning return on a track she already has a win to his credit at Pontefract.
The 4yo filly was running over 2m as soon as she was able to last summer, finishing second at Beverley in July. She then went on to run a series of fine races over longer distances. Soft ground certainly helped in the autumn as she went back to back in winning at Carlisle and then here – both stiff tracks too.
She was probably over the top when well beaten here on her final start, but she is far better judged on those earlier consistent efforts. There should be no reason why she cannot progress again this season. Whilst the going is probably faster than ideal, trainer Mick Channon often has his string well forward in the spring (especially the fillies) and Silvestre De Sousa is a positive booking.
1pt win – So Near So Farhh – 3.40 Pontefract – 100/30 general
