Steve Hughes has selections for the two biggest races in Britain on Easter Sunday
There will be huge crowds at Plumpton and Ffos Las today for their premier fixtures in the calendar, with the Sussex Champion Hurdle and West Wales National the centrepieces. I have selections for both races. Our profitable week continued with a win for Django Django (advised 15/2) and an each-way place for Casa Tall (also advised 15/2).
Plumpton 3.25: Legal History
Unfortunately Plumpton’s big race is cutting up somewhat due to the fast ground, but there is still a decent field and the improving juvenile Legal History can benefit from receiving weight all round.
I had this horse on my “to follow” list on the flat at this time last year, as he looked to be a scopey sort sure to improve with time. However he never quite put it all together on the level and he was looking disappointing after not really progressing on his first two outings over hurdles for David Pipe.
It did mean though he started with a generous enough rating of 105 and he has improved dramatically for the better ground in the past few weeks. He won the valuable juvenile handicap on Ascot’s card three weeks ago, and seemed to revel in the big field. He has since followed up under a penalty at Exeter and has the natural pace to cope with this return to a sharper track.
Ffos Las 4.20: Henllan Harri
I am not sure how reliable Henllan Harri is these days, but in another race that is cutting up due to quickening going, this 11yo will not mind the fast conditions.
The former Bet365 Gold Cup winner at Sandown enjoyed a profitable summer in 2018, winning the Perth Gold Cup before chasing home Virgilio in the Summer Cup at Uttoxeter. A long trip on fast ground is what he needs and therefore I am happy to write off his two runs so far in 2019, failing to finish the Veterans final at Sandown before trailing home a distant third at Ludlow.
The extra 4f on a more galloping track today will be to his liking and he will be coming into this contest a fully fresh horse. He has also dropped back down to a mark 1lb below his excellent Uttoxeter effort. This is the time of year when Peter Bowen’s horses tend to come good and he can make it two in a row in this contest for the Bowen family.
1.5pts win – Legal History – 3.25 Plumpton – 2/1 general
1pt win – Henllan Harri – 4.20 Ffos Las – 9/2 general
