Will we be Red Hot on Derby Day

Ray Flanagan with Derby Day selections

thought for the days: I recall one of my Father’s favourite horse racing mottos was “fourth in the Guineas-First in the Derby

A few selections

Epsom 2.00- Red Hot

Ran a good race in the Chester Oaks last time and promises to be suited by dropping down in trip. Looks overpriced.

Epsom 3.45- Open Wide

Quite an eye-catcher at Goodwood on penultimate start and while not as good at York subsequently looks a big price judged on best form.

Epsom 4.30- Madhmoon and Bangkok

Last year it was 3rd at Newmarket- 1st at Epsom- this year could it be the famous old saying 4th at Newmarket-1st in Derby.

Madhmoon has been a hugely hyped horse in Prendergast’s yard reported to over a stone better than his recent Irish Guineas winner Awtaad.

Although none of the experts predicted it, my own suspicions were confirmed in the Guineas were he simply did not have the pace to win. The same experts are now saying he will not stay the Derby distance- yet horse racing is not a game of science and while on pedigree he ought not to be a middle-distance horse there are always exceptions to the rule.

I believe Madhmoon will be an exception and he will power to victory today. I will also be delighted to see the great Kevin Prendergast land his first Derby at the age of 86, briefly taking the spotlight from O’ Brien and Gosden who are having too much domination.

Bangkok is worth an interest also. In keeping with a more logical approach , Balding’s contender is an out an out middle distance horse on pedigree and his form in the lead in to the race may have been underestimated.
