Steve Hughes looks ahead to the opening day of seven at Listowel
The Harvest Festival in Listowel commences in Kerry today with a jumping card to kick things off. We have to wait some time for the highlight, a 2m4f chase in the penultimate race on the card. I also have a selection for York. We found the big winner in Hello Youmzain yesterday (advised 13/2) with Ripp Orf placing for the each-way selection (advised 5/1).
York 2.20: Archie Perkins
In such great and consistent form all year, Archie Perkins is a nice each-way price to maintain a record that has seen him place in the first three in his last six starts.
His two runs at this track over today’s extended 10f trip have been excellent. He was third on rain softened ground in June and then won a class 4 in July on ground more akin to today. Whilst he has a tremendous record at Beverley with three wins there, I believe his keen going style is more suited to a flatter track like this where racing prominently is rewarded more often.
Still only four there is no reason why he cannot defy a career high mark of 85 and it might be worth taking on the Godolphin favourite in a big field on his first time in a handicap. We know we are going to get a solid performance from Nigel Tinkler’s charge and there are plenty of hold up horses here that could give a tactical advantage to the selection.
Listowel 4.40: Ask Susan
She has had plenty of racing for a 7yo, but Ask Susan has not been with champion trainer Willie Mullins for too long and must surely land a prize of this type sometime soon.
She has been thereabouts at some of the big fixtures this summer in four runs for her new yard. She was sixth at Fairyhouse, third at Punchestown and in the Mayo National and most recently second at Galway. All have been on goodish going and the drying ground at Listowel will help today.
This represents something of a drop in class for the mare and she had a solid win record for her previous yard including two wins over fences. She has not been penalised much by the handicapper for her consistent efforts going up 2lbs to 125 so this looks an ideal opportunity for connections to claim a decent pot.
