Steve Hughes has two selections for Sunday’s meeting at Doncaster
A solid card at Doncaster on Sunday, but there is a real standout race with one of the best mares only chases run in Britain, featuring a Grade 1 winner, the BetVictor Gold Cup heroine and a dual listed winner this season and a multiple graded winner over both hurdles and fences. I have a selection for this, but my best bet runs in a handicap later on the card. We had a solid Saturday with victory for Copperhead (advised 4/1) and a place for the each-way bet Road to Respect (advised 9/2).
Doncaster 1.35: Casablanca Mix
An absolute cracker and I am favouring the mare in form which is the progressive Casablanca Mix.
She made it 3-3 this season when winning a similar race to this over 2m4f at Aintree earlier in the month. She can take time to warm up in her races and for the first half of the contest she was simply unable to match the pace of Listen Dear. However she came into her own in the closing stages and ultimately won comfortably. I think this stiffer track will bring her stamina more into play.
She had already won two good handicaps in the summer including the valuable Summer Plate at Market Rasen and at only seven years of age, still looks to be on the up. On the other hand it is possible we might already have seen the best of La Bague Au Roi and Lady Buttons, whilst Happy Diva has it to prove on ratings, despite her excellent win at Cheltenham last month.
Doncaster 2.45: Bob Mahler
Definitely at his best on a stiff track, good ground and a long trip, Bob Mahler, representing the Warren Greatrex yard gets his ideal conditions for the first time this season at Doncaster today.
Totally at sea on heavy going on his return at Cheltenham, he ran much more respectably when third at Haydock last month. However that track is sharper than ideal and I am sure he will be better suited by this more galloping circuit.
He showed his true ability with back to back wins in the spring at Newbury and Cheltenham, the latter over 3m1f. A few dry days has helped to dry out Doncaster, one of the fastest draining jumps tracks in the country and as he is only 3lbs higher than for that last win he is a confident each-way bet.
1pt win – Casablanca Mix – 1.35 Doncaster – 11/4 general
1pt each-way – Bob Mahler – 2.45 Doncaster – 6/1 general
