Steve Hughes has a selection for Plumpton’s annual highlight
The Sussex National is the main event across the two British meetings on Sunday. Plumpton’s big race of the year lacks the quality of the bigger Nationals but it is an open race for which I have a selection. We did ok on Saturday with Jepeck a 4/1 (advised) winner and Cap Du Nord placing for the each-way bet (advised 7/1).
Plumpton 2.40: Christmas in April
This contest represents a first dabble into marathon company for Christmas in April and I think Colin Tizzard’s 8yo will be up to the test.
First time cheekpieces had a positive effect at Fontwell last time when the gelding made most to win. He raced lazily at times and I think he was value for more than the 1l winning margin. That was not a great race in terms of quality or quantity, but it was a second good run after a decent comeback second at Chepstow in the autumn.
Christmas in April was a decent hurdler including a good third to First Assignment at Cheltenham early last season. Still only rated 123, he is the sort of horse to combine that solid hurdle speed around this sharp track to marry up with the required stamina to win a race of this distance.
1pt win – Christmas in April – 2.40 Plumpton – 4/1 general
