River set to run home first

Steve Hughes has one selection for Sunday

We are a bit short on quantity on Sunday with plenty of small fields. Only six are currently left in the staying chase at Kelso, but they are a good group and the heavy rain overnight should play into the hands of my selection. Captain Chaos was placed for the each-way bet on Saturday (advised 14/1).

Kelso 3.00: Big River

Now ten years old, Big River has probably not delivered the promise he showed as a youngster, but he has rarely failed to perform at this track and the heavy going makes him the stand out option.

He is 5-7 at the track – his only two defeats came when narrowly beaten in a hurdle and then when brought down here last time in the Borders National when travelling well enough. He is a horse that can get behind early before finishing strongly, but there are two things in his favour that should reduce that issue today. Firstly the going is so testing that a slow pace looks assured, whilst this small field means he should not drift too far behind the front-runners.

As his record proves he likes flat tracks like Kelso – he was a fine fifth in last spring’s Scottish National at Ayr and I think he is the horse certain to be suited by the conditions.

Recommended bet:

1pt win – Big River – 3.00 Kelso – 4/1 Bet365
