Steve Hughes has a pick for Fontwell’s Sunday feature
As usual the National Spirit (Fontwell’s premier jumps race of the season) makes up for lack of quantity with five talented horses in the line up. I have a selection to take on the warm favourite. Who Dares Wins gave us a good winner on Saturday (SP 10/1) with Black Corton placing for the each-way bet (advised 5/1).
Fontwell 3.20: Quel Destin
Right back to form at Sandown last time, I fancy Quel Destin to upset Champion Hurdle hope Thomas Darby in this Grade 2.
Th 5yo has an exceptional record in small fields and bounced right back to his best when getting the better of Sandown specialist Call Me Lord at the Esher track earlier this month. That made it 2-2 on heavy going this season having already battled home on testing going at Cheltenham in the autumn.
Whilst he is as yet unproven at this 2m3f trip, this sharp track will aid his stamina and as a prominent racer this small field will suit him. If jockey Sam Twiston-Davies can set the right fractions he could prove hard to pass and resume a winning partnership with the gelding that started with a Grade 1 win at Chepstow last season.
1pt win – Quel Destin – 3.20 Fontwell – 10/3 William Hill
