Ray Flanagan with Cheltenham selections
thought for the day: I am out of touch with racing this season but a few rattles all the same for Cheltenham
Cheltenham 2.10- Notebook
The two Irish trained contenders at the head of the market look to hold all the aces. Logic might point towards Fakir D’oudairies who has the best overall form, in -addition to previous course experience, always an important factor around here.
I cannot help but feel that Notebook has the more scope and power though and this fine specimen of a chaser could be the real deal. He has jumped impeccably in all four chasing wins and when it comes to the crunch his ability to gain at his fences and his superior size may ultimately prove decisive. He has beat Fakir before and I take him to do so again.
Cheltenham 2.50- No Comment
Has been quietly fancied for a few handicaps including the KimMuir last year where he ran ok but was handicapped by a poor ride in my opinion. Could be well weighted off 10-4 and reason to believe today’s distance is probably his optimum. Last time out fall in Ireland is a negative but crucially has the services of Dickie Johnson today- a good strong no nonsense ride is what the horse wants and could finally make his mark.
Cheltenham 3.30- Pentland Hills and Not So Sleepy
Shocking renewal with a field of scrubbers lining up for the champion crown. Pentland Hills has had excuses for two defeats this term and may be better judged on his two successes at Cheltenham and Aintree last season which entitle him to as good of chance as any. Travels well in a race indicating a degree of class and a squeak particularly if recent breathing operation is effective.
Not So Sleepy was a fair tool on the flat and created a good impression with two front running successes earlier in the season. Wise to forgive Betfair Hurdle effort and no forlorn hope if getting his own way out in front today.
Cheltenham 4.50- Whatmore
Could be another springer for Johnson here. Ran an eyecatching race on Warwick on penultimate state and caught the eye with good effort in the race formerly known as the Racing Post Chase recently. Strong run 2m 4F may prove ideal and a lively outsider here.
