Ray Flanagan with Ascot selections
Ascot 3.00- Hamish
This type of horse has been winning all week with Hamish holding a similar profile to fellow handicap improvers Lord North and Mountain Angel. On the face of it holds a difficult task against the likes of Elarqam but displayed himself a considerable improver when hosing up ay York last autumn and will relish today’s trip and conditions more than most.
Ascot 4.10- Noble Prize
Aidan O Brien usually finds something to either win or go close in the Queen’s Vase. One of his arrows at therace this year is Nobel Prize a strapping albeit non flashy staying type who boasts a fine pedigree as a full brother to Highland Reel and Idaho.
Punters may be underestimating the form of his Naas maiden (beat Chiricachua) and I will not be surprised if he improves significantly for a stamina test this afternoon and springs a minor surprise.
Ascot 4.40- Deja and Durston
Deja will likely relish the soft ground and potential demanding test over 12furlongs today. Looked a handicapper to follow when beating Soto Sizzler at Kempton last season and with a decent record fresh previously, holds a good chance.
At fancy prices I would not discount Scarlet Dragon, however for a second interest I will side with Durston who will probably emerge as the best of these in time. William Haggas’ charge was a close second at Goodwood last summer in a top handicap and travelled sweetly on the bridle when stepping up in class in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury. Slight concern he may not get home if racing too keenly again today but too classy a horse to rule out.
