Best to obey the Fiscal Rules at The Curragh

Ray Flanagan with Curragh selections

Music To My Ears ( 1st 25-1 advised) ran out a good winner at The Curragh yesterday maintaining what has been an unexpectedly good punting time for the column since the resumption of racing.

A few Saturday selections. hoping to maintain the momentum.

Newcastle 3.35- Carnwennan

Won the consolation plate in emphatic style 12 months ago and might be able to land the main course itself this afternoon a year later. Encouragingly after last years success connections talked about further improvement to come from this horse and that he had not yet reached his maximum as a stayer. There was plenty to like about his most recent effort over the course and distance conceding 12 pounds ro Smart Champion and everything looks right for a decent display.

Curragh 6.15- Ice Cold in Alex and No Needs Never

The ultra consistent Ice Cold In Alex needs no introductions and no handicapper deserves a good pot more than this fella. Runner-up in the corresponding race in 2019 and could get  his snout in front here.

No Needs Never is a quirky type who has a question mark over his resolution. Has competed at a slightly higher level than this previously though and dropping in grade combined with getting more cover in a big field could be right up his street.

Curragh 7.15- Fiscal Rules

Far from a vintage renewal with Queens Vase winner Santiago making little appeal as the race favourite. The great Jim Bolger (pictured) has won two Irish Derby’s previously and the old master might just nab a third and upstage his protegy Aidan O Brien on this occasion.

Fiscal Rules is not your typical profile of a Derby winner coming off two defeats in only two races; but at the same time his form is arguably the best on offer with his fifth in the Irish Guineas representing Classic Form. Not guaranteed to stay but the dam’s side of the pedigree is very encouraging in that regard and overall on breeding looks more of a 12 furlong horse than many of his main rivals.

It would be nice actually to see a winner from outside team O’Brien and this lad might bring home the bacon for us.
