Zoe can Zoom in the Amateur Handicap

Ray Flanagan with Galway Races selections

thought for the day: It is 2015 since I last had a successful Galway. After four barren years can I fare any better this time around

Chiricahua (4-1sp) was a winner in the previous column in Friday.

A Galway festival like no other although being honest it is purely a racing week from my point of view and the main thing is the wonderful equine action is going ahead.

Galway 5.45- Khafaaq

Was lit up by blinkers when not getting home at Leopardstown last time. Better judged on previous good second to Gee Rex at Fairyhouse. Could be hard to peg back if rider can get out in front from not ideal stall 12.

Galway 6.15- Centroid and Contraposto

Centroid appeared to be bubbling nicely to the boil with fourth placed finish at Leopardstown recently. Going up in trip and softer ground than encountered previously here;  but pedigree and previous trainer comments suggest improvement will be forthcoming and that trip and ground will suit.

Contraposto has been unlucky on a few occasions in recent months. May appreciate a tight undulating right handed circuit and seems too big a price to ignore for a small nibble.

Galway 6.45- Princess Zoe and De Name Escapes Me

Princess Zoe won the Ladies Derby at The Curragh in a hack canter a few weeks ago. Subjected to a stone higher mark by the assessor but no telling how much these mares can improve once finding their stride. I am a sucker for a speed horse and feel the speed of this mare could blow them away.

De Name Escapes Me is a solid each way play. He had a few notable efforts on the flat throughout 2019 and returned with a pleasing runner-up effort beind Dalton Highway at The Curragh in June. A repeat should see him bang in the thick of proceedings.

Galway 7.45- Got Trumped

In previous times when I have had successful Galways I have found the winner of the concluding race on the Monday evening.(Princely Conn in 2014 probably being the most notable)

A possible decent outsider this year is the Jessica Harrington-trained Got Trumped. This contender was a usedul hurdler previously and has arguably the best flat form on the basis of placing behind good handicapper Johnny Drama in a Gowran maiden back in April 2019.

Could stun them all this evening.
