Ray Flanagan with Newbury and Fairyhouse selections
I can never be as committed to the jumps racing as the flat and my selections carry the caveat of me only taking a passing interest. At any rate a few stabs at today’s card which features the famous Hennessey Gold Cup.
Newbury 3.00- Aye Right and La Baque Au Roi
Aye Right posted a nice reappearance effort jumping boldly and travelling nicely throughout in the recent Charlie Hall Chase. I also think his RSA Chase run last March was better than his final placing suggested. He should get a nice toe into the contest today with plenty of pacesetters and this fluent jumping type could have his ideal conditions with the ground riding on the quick side. Connections have travelled a long way from Scotland and hopefully the trip will be justified with a bold showing.
No horse is better handicapped than La Baque Au Roi who was good enough to beat subsequent RSA heroine and Gold Cup fancy Topofthegame in the 2018 Feltham Chase. The horse has had his problems since but I thought he ran well for a long way at Wetherby and could be primed today on his second outing since undergoing a wind operation. Not to be underestimate with Dickie Johnson doing the steering.
Fairyhouse-2.46- Jake Peter
Jake had some nice form over hurdles throughout 2018 and 2019 and signalled a return to form recently with a sixth placed finish in the Naas November handicap on the flat. Could be handicapped for a decent showing.
