Play it Strait at York

Ray Flanagan with York Wednesday selections.

Tauran Shaman (6-1) was a winner for the column on Sunday. Always one of my favourite racetracks, York takes centre-stage this week with their cracking May Dante meeting. Hoping we can get off to a good start on Day One.

York- 1.40- Strait of Hormuz and Sam Cooke

Strait of Hormuz created a telling impression when winning at Doncaster last backend and looks the type to make further strides forward this season. He appears to possess a good turn of foot and it is encouraging to note that he won in seasonal return last season. Type of hold -up horse who suits his jockey Jamie Spencer and we will hope for a good effort.

The lightly raced Sam Cooke promises more to come than what he has shown thus far. His Ascot second to Jerimiah indicates he has a decent handicap in him and the bit of cut in the ground this afternoon will be a help to his chances.

York 4.50- Good Birthday.

Definite stamina concerns for Good Birthday who also sports a first-time visor. Connections are obviously feeling they have to try something different with the horses limitations getting well exposed on his last few outings. Nonetheless, is dropping in grade today and return to a conventional galloping track and longer distance should give him more time to warm up, and provided he can last the extra distance, give him a better chance to get competitive at the business end.
