Steve Hughes has two selections for the one guaranteed meeting in Britain at Southwell
With Doncaster subject to a morning inspection, I have concentrated on the All Weather fixture at Southwell where there are two competitive handicaps of interest.
Southwell 1.50 – Ruler of the Nile
A winner over 2m here as a 4yo, Ruler of the Nile has gone a long time without winning since, but with his stamina for 2m assured he looks solid each-way value.
He has placed fourth on his last three starts, all at this trip and is beginning to get some leeway from the assessor now. He has been beaten 5l in those last two runs on Polytrack, but is just as adept on the Fibresand and ran well to fill that same position behind Gabrials Star here last month.
He was probably not fully tuned up that day, but is fully fit now. He is back to within 2lbs of his last winning mark now and there are a few rivals with something to prove at the maximum 2m trip. That is not the case with this fella.
Southwell 2.25: Captain Lars
He is not the most consistent of performers, but has twelve wins to his name now so Captain Lars looks the one to beat in the feature.
He has really recaptured his best form of late, hacking up in a Chelmsford claimer last month despite the rein breaking early on. Of more relevance to today, he handled the Fibresand well to win a more competitive race than this last week, seeing off the challenge of our selection Tricky Dicky.
Those wins came at 6f, but he definitely has the pace for 5f – indeed he won this same race on the card in 2016, beating today’s rival Piazon. With three previous wins at the track he clearly handles the deep surface well.
0.75pts each-way – Ruler of the Nile – 1.50 Southwell – 13/2 Bet365
1pt win – Captain Lars – 2.25 Southwell – 11/4 general
