Steve Hughes goes to Bangor for an excellent midweek card.
Two class 2 handicaps and a mares listed chase are on the menu at Bangor on Dee this afternoon, and with decent fields assembling, I am sticking with the Welsh track for today’s duo.
Bangor 1.45: Potters Legend
Potters Legend won his first two starts over fences, including at this venue twelve months ago. Although he has been beaten in six runs since, all have been top quality contests and he has been performing admirably in most of those.
Those runs included a second place on Festival trials day at Cheltenham and then a fourth place in the Kim Muir at the Festival itself. There is no doubting his stamina for 3m, and he seems adaptable ground wise.
Perhaps his biggest weakness can be the inclination to make the odd jumping error. That was the case again at Chepstow on his reappearance, but I liked his finishing effort that day and he can be expected to be far sharper today. He may prove to be better on a flatter track like this and this is a much smaller field than he has been used to of late – the extra space he will have over his fences might aid his fluency over the obstacles.
Bangor 2.50: Cool Sky
Trainer Ian Williams did us really well on Saturday and I see no reason to desert him as he saddles the lightly weighted Cool Sky.
The 8yo has often been kept away from very soft ground, but on recent evidence he actually seems to need cut now. He does come into this race off the back of a good going win at Uttoxeter, where he was value for more than a 1l win in a falsely run contest.
However prior to that he had won one of the longest races in the flat race calendar over 2m5f at Goodwood in that monsoon on Sussex Stakes day. You don’t win a race of that calibre if you don’t stay or act on soft going. He definitely looks to need this trip now having needed every yard of the 2m2f distance to win at Fontwell in the spring. He is only edging up the handicap for his small margin wins, so still has room to improve further.
